Christchurch is the South Island's hub and about 400,000 people. It is also the city where we have the most clients outside the Kāpiti Coast, which makes it the easiest place on this list for us to show rather than tell.

Proof

Work we have done here

Christchurch is where we have the most clients outside the Kāpiti Coast, which makes it the easiest place on this list to show rather than tell.

Architectural home builders in Christchurch. Website and SEO. A considered-purchase trade where someone researches for months before they enquire, so the site has to survive a long look rather than win a quick one.

A commercial and window cleaning firm in Christchurch, trading since 1998. Website and SEO. The opposite problem: a fragmented market where nobody searches “cleaning company” and everybody searches something narrower.

Both have been running long enough that the arrangement has been tested rather than assumed, and neither has needed us to be in the city.

A city still shaped by the rebuild

More than a decade on, construction and the trades that follow it remain a larger share of the Christchurch economy than they are anywhere else in New Zealand. Builders, architects, engineers, landscapers, roofers, electricians - the competition in those categories is denser here than the population alone would suggest.

If you are in one of them, expect a longer climb than the same business would face in Dunedin or Nelson, and plan for it rather than being surprised by it.

The flat city problem

Christchurch is unusually flat and unusually well gridded, which sounds irrelevant and is not. It means people will travel across the city in a way they simply will not in Wellington or Dunedin, where hills and harbours make five kilometres feel like twenty.

So “near me” carries less weight here than it does elsewhere. A Christchurch customer will drive to Hornby from Shirley if the reviews are better. That cuts both ways: your service area is genuinely wider than your suburb, and so is everybody else's.

In practice it means city-level terms are more worth chasing in Christchurch than they are in Auckland, and suburb pages matter slightly less.

Selwyn and Waimakariri are separate markets

Rolleston is one of the fastest growing towns in the country and Rangiora is not far behind. Both sit outside Christchurch City and both are full of businesses serving the city and residents searching for services in their own town.

If your customers come from those districts, that is a page of its own rather than a line on your Christchurch page. The competition there is a fraction of what it is in the city, and the searches are genuinely different.

What we would look at first

Google Business Profile, because it is free and it is what decides the map pack. Then a page for each service you actually sell rather than one page listing all of them. Then reviews.

Paid advertising after that, with a radius drawn around where your customers really come from - which in Christchurch is usually wider than you would guess.

Questions from Christchurch businesses

You are in the North Island. How does that work?

Not so far. We have two Christchurch clients, both long-running, and the work has never needed us to be in the city. Everything is in your dashboard as it happens, reporting is monthly, and you can phone the person doing the work.

Is construction really more competitive here?

For search, yes. The rebuild left Christchurch with more builders, architects and allied trades per head than anywhere else in the country, and they are all bidding for the same terms. Plan for a longer climb in those categories.

Should I target Christchurch, or my suburb?

More of the city than you would elsewhere. Christchurch is flat and gridded, so people genuinely travel across it - “near me” matters less here than in Wellington or Dunedin. City-level terms are worth going after sooner.

What about Rolleston, Rangiora and the wider districts?

Separate pages, usually. Selwyn and Waimakariri are outside the city, growing fast, and far less contested. If your customers come from there it is often the easier win.
