Digital Marketing in Nelson

An economy with mountains around it, which shows up in the search results.

Nelson is about 51,000 people at the top of the South Island, separated from everywhere else by geography rather than distance. That isolation is genuinely useful for local search, and most businesses here under-use it.

Proof

Work we have done here

We work with businesses across both islands, including two long-running clients in Christchurch and provincial work through Whanganui, the Manawatū and the Wairarapa.

Architectural home building. Website and SEO for a considered-purchase trade where someone researches for months before they make contact.

Commercial and window cleaning, trading since 1998. A fragmented market where nobody searches the category and everybody searches something narrower. The answer was a page for each sector.

Tourism. A guided experience whose visitors plan from other cities entirely - directly relevant to anyone in Nelson selling to the Abel Tasman trade.

Behind it, twenty-two years of Fortune 500 marketing across four continents with LVMH, Estée Lauder and The Body Shop.

Isolation is an advantage

Nelson is hemmed in by mountains and a long way by road from Christchurch or Blenheim. That makes it a genuinely self-contained economy in a way few New Zealand cities are.

For search, that is good news. Your competition is other Nelson businesses, not a national field. Nobody in Auckland is bidding on “builder Nelson”, and a customer in Stoke is not driving to Blenheim for a plumber.

A well-built page can hold position one here for a fraction of what the same result costs in a connected market, and hold it for longer because there is less churn.

Richmond and Motueka are separate

Richmond sits in Tasman District rather than Nelson City, and locals know the difference even when businesses treat them as one place. Motueka is forty minutes away and functions as its own town entirely.

If your customers come from those areas, they are worth their own pages. The competition there is thinner again, and “Richmond” as a search term is far less contested than “Nelson”.

The visitor economy is a separate business

Nelson is the gateway to Abel Tasman and gets a substantial seasonal visitor population, plus a well-known arts, craft and food scene that draws people deliberately.

If you serve visitors, your customer is planning from somewhere else, weeks or months ahead, and searching the region and the experience rather than the town. That work has almost nothing in common with ranking for a trade term, and mixing the two on one site usually weakens both.

The ceiling, stated honestly

Fifty thousand people is a finite number of searches. Ranking first for a local trade term in Nelson is achievable and worth having, but it is not unlimited demand.

The businesses that grow past that point are the ones selling beyond the region - shipping nationally, serving Tasman and Marlborough as well, or targeting visitors. That is a different strategy and it is worth deciding which one you are before spending anything.

Questions from Nelson businesses

Is Nelson too small for SEO to be worth it?

The opposite, usually. Isolation means you are competing against other Nelson businesses rather than a national field, so position one costs far less here than in a connected market. The real limit is the number of people searching, not the difficulty of ranking.

Do Richmond and Motueka need their own pages?

Often, yes. Richmond is Tasman District rather than Nelson City and locals search accordingly. Motueka is a separate town entirely. Both are less contested than “Nelson”, which frequently makes them the easier win.

Most of my customers are visitors. What changes?

Nearly everything. They are searching from elsewhere, well ahead of arriving, for the region and the experience rather than the town. That needs its own pages and its own terms, and it should not be blended with local service pages.

How do we work together day to day?

Everything is in your dashboard as it happens, reporting is monthly and in plain English, and you can phone the person doing the work. Our Christchurch clients have run that way for years.
