Digital Marketing in Ōtaki

Small town, national reach.

Ōtaki is the smallest market on the coast and the one where local search alone will not fill your diary. The businesses that do well here sell beyond the town - to the expressway traffic, to Levin and Horowhenua, or online to the whole country.

Proof

Work we have done here

Ōtaki sits at the top of our own patch, and the businesses we work with nearest to it face exactly the challenge this town does - a market too small to be the whole audience.

A home builder in Whanganui and an internet provider covering the Manawatū and Tararua - both an hour or so up the line, both needing to be found well beyond their own postcode.

Trades and local services across Kāpiti, including electrical, landscaping and kitchens, where the job is ranking for the right work in the right town rather than everything everywhere.

Behind it, twenty-two years of Fortune 500 marketing across four continents with LVMH, Estée Lauder and The Body Shop.

Why Ōtaki needs a wider net

The expressway changed things. Traffic that used to crawl through the main street now goes past it, which hurt some businesses and helped others - the ones that gave people a reason to turn off.

For most Ōtaki businesses that means local SEO is necessary but not sufficient. The searches that matter are often regional rather than town-level: "Horowhenua", "Kāpiti", or the product itself with no place name at all.

It also means Google Ads geography needs thinking about. A radius around Ōtaki is a small pool. A radius around the expressway corridor is a much larger one, and it costs the same per click.

Sitting on a district boundary

Ōtaki is the top of Kāpiti and the bottom of Horowhenua, and that is a genuine advantage most businesses here do not use. Two districts means two sets of searches, two council areas, and customers who think of themselves as belonging to one or the other rather than both.

In practice that is two pages rather than one - a Kāpiti page and a Horowhenua or Levin page, each written for how that audience actually searches. Trying to serve both from a single page usually means ranking properly for neither, and the Levin market is often the less contested of the two.

Selling past the town

The businesses that do best in Ōtaki are the ones not relying on Ōtaki. A retailer with a working online shop, a maker who ships nationally, a specialist trade willing to travel - all of them are competing in a pool many times larger than the town, and none of them need to rank first locally to do well.

If that is you, the priority order changes. A site that sells rather than describes, product or service pages that answer national searches, and paid advertising with a radius drawn around your actual customers rather than your address.

The passing trade question

For anyone whose customers come off State Highway 1, the Google Business Profile matters more than the website. "Open now", "near me" and "nearest" are the searches, and they are answered by hours, photographs, categories and reviews rather than by any page you write.

That is a cheap fix and most businesses have never done it properly.

Questions from Ōtaki businesses

Is local search enough in a town this size?

Often not on its own. Ōtaki has fewer searchers than Paraparaumu, so ranking first for a local term may still be a small number of enquiries. The businesses that do well here usually pair local search with something that reaches further - Meta advertising, or ranking for the region rather than the town.

We get a lot of passing traffic off State Highway 1. Does that change anything?

Yes, and it is worth building for. Passing trade searches differently - “coffee near me”, “nearest”, “open now” - and that is Google Business Profile territory rather than website territory. Hours, photos and reviews do more for that visitor than any page will.

Should we be targeting Levin and Horowhenua too?

Frequently yes. Ōtaki sits at the top of Kāpiti and the bottom of Horowhenua, and plenty of businesses here serve both. That is two pages rather than one, aimed at two different sets of searches.
